About UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor):
To cut the threat of cancer, we must reduce sun exposure. UPF apparel is required to be tested to determine the amount of UVA and UVB radiation that it allows to pass through to the skin. This rating is called UPF or Ultraviolet Protection Factor. SPF or Sun Protection Factor is a rating that is given to liquid sunscreens for direct application to the skin. UPF numbers are not equal to SPF numbers.
UVB radiation causes most sunburns. UVA radiation passes further into the skin and is thought to cause the most dangerous cancers like melanoma. It is important that your sunscreen protect you from both UVA and UVB. Therefore look for a broad spectrum sunscreen. Although it may provide effective sun protection, SPF liquid sunscreen has to be re-applied, stains things it comes in contact with, including the boat, your clothing, and most fishing gear.
In contrast, long sleeve sun protection shirts with the correct UPF will protect you all day long.
When it comes to the sun, let the shirt do the work.
What is the safest UPF value? First of all, it is advised by the American Cancer Society that a UPF of 40 to 50 in clothing is excellent protection from the sun’s radiation. Rattlin Jack’s UPF 50+ shirts have the highest rating that can be advertised, with all day UVA and UVB protection. Rattlin Jack UV apparel, along with a Rattlin Jack sun mask will easily cut exposure to solar radiation when worn. Combine with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and fishing gloves for ultimate safety from UV exposure. Fish as long as you want!
Our long sleeve shirts are rated Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) 50+.

About the Fabric:
The first priority of Long Sleeve Sun Protection Shirts is preventing skin cancer. The next priority is preventing skin rash. Because performance polyester dries very quickly, it is the best fabric to wick moisture away from the skin. Rattlin Jack uses smooth, soft, moisture-wicking polyester interlock which allows maximum airflow, therefore keeping you comfortable. Polyester is easy to care, (wash and hang), and will never crack, warp or shrink. Therefore Rattlin Jack is the excellent attire for fishing or boating in hot, humid climates. Furthermore, it is an excellent moisture wicking first layer in cold climates.
The printing process is dye sublimation, not silkscreen. The ink is heated so it bonds to the fabric via a heat press. It is not a silk-screened rubber patch stuck to the fabric. Therefore the dye sublimated ink does not clog the breathability of the fabric. As a result, our Long Sleeve Sun Protection Shirts are as breathable as it was before it was printed. This makes for a much cooler shirt to wear in contrast with a rubbery silk screened design.
Easy Care of 100% Performance Polyester Wear:
Machine wash: cold water, separate colors. No softeners. No bleach. Do not dry clean. Hang to dry or tumble dry low.
Stains: Avoid contact with sunscreen, which stains all fabric. Stains can be addressed promptly by applying full-strength liquid laundry detergent with no fabric softener and let sit before laundering. Vigorous rubbing the fabric together with the soap can dislodge stains, and will not stretch the fabric or remove the decoration.
Iron: with a cool iron when necessary. Use the lowest (coolest) steam setting, over the whole shirt, usually marked “WOOL”. Avoid the decoration when ironing. Do not iron when turned inside out. Iron only one layer at a time.
Snags: All Polyester performance wicking fabric is vulnerable to snags. Push a needle threader through the fabric from the underside. Then put the snagged thread through the needle threader. Pull the needle threader back through while pulling the snag to the underside of the fabric to make it less visible.
